The No. 84 Porsche team of Fischer Motorsport captured fourth place finish in an extraordinarily challenging iRacing NEC season finale at the Nürburgring on Sunday, which was just enough to claim third place in the 2020 series championship.

The 2020 iRacing Nürburgring Endurance Championship concluded on Sunday, as fog wrapped the beautiful Eifel region of the Nürburgring in a thick layer of fog, that only later in the afternoon saw some sun rays break through.

Manuel Mayer and Benjamin Fischer started Round 9 from sixth position and got off to a good start with Mayer behind the wheel. However, handling issues and overheating tires plagued the team all day long and dropped the team back to seventh place early on.

On lap 12 Mayer had to avoid the crashed car of another CUP class competitor at the Steilstrecke corner, almost putting an end to the day for the team.

“I have to say, that was a scary moment. I saw him, slowed but then he suddenly decided to put it in reverse just as we were approaching the corner. That was totally crazy.”, Mayer commented the scene.

As the race went along, other teams found trouble and so Mayer and teammate Fischer were able to work their way back to fourth position, also in large part because the team managed to avoid making mistakes under difficult circumstances.

“We just were way off on pace today. The setup felt good in practice, but today it was just way off. I’m proud of how we managed the situation and held on. That was huge for us today.”, explained Fischer.

Fischer endured two more scares on the final lap, going off track at Hohe Acht and losing control at Brünnchen, but held on to bring home the fourth place finish, that sealed the team’s third place finish in the official series championship.

“It’s an incredible achievement for the team. We’ve worked really hard for this. I’m so proud of Manuel and everybody on the team. We all made this happen as a team. I’m sure there will be some beers going down tonight.”, Fischer celebrated the team’s achievement.

“Yeah, I’m super happy that we managed to accomplish our goal, which was to bring home the third place in the championship. Today wasn’t our best race, but we did what we had to and I’m really happy that we were able to pull it off.”, Mayer said.

In nine championship rounds in 2020, the No. 84 Porsche took home two wins, seven top-5 and one pole position. In total, the team completed 274 race laps at the Nürburgring Nordschleife during the season, which equals to approximately 6,694 kilometers (4,184 miles).
